Dr Jalal Dabbeek, Director of Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction Centre/ Earth Sciences and Seismic Engineering Centre (ESSEC) and Vice Chair of the National Agency for Disaster Risk Mitigation in Palestine, recently participated in the activities of the NERA Swiss -Seismo School. Dr Dabbeek, alongwith ten other expert lecturers in the area of disaster risk mitigation, was the only speaker from Middle Eastern country lecturing at this international event.
His session addressed An-Najah National University’s Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction Centre, focusing on the centre's public awareness programmes. These programmes include a course on earthquakes and disaster risk reduction, which is required for all BA and MA students, in addition to seismic design workshops, disaster management courses, workshops and seminars, and community service and consultancy programmes. In addition to these opportunities, activities are being carried out by An-Najah in cooperation with the European Earthquake Engineering Centre (EUCENTRE) and IUSS Institute in Pavia, Italy, within European projects (SASPARM - FP7).
A number of teachers from several European countries took part in the event. The attendees were impressed with An-Najah’s experience in embracing disaster risk mitigation by providing relevant courses, especially the disaster risk mitigation for non-engineers, which has been taught since 1998.
Dr Dabbeek also met with experts from the Britain, France, Romania, Japan, Switzerland, Turkey, etc to discuss possible future cooperation, as well as the Palestinian Ambassador in Switzerland and Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Dr Ibrahim Khreisheh.
