The following is a message from Margareta Wahlström

04/10/2013 15:11:00

The following is a message from Margareta Wahlström, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and head of UNISDR, regarding this year's International Day for Disaster Reduction (Oct 13).

************************

This year's theme for 13 October - the International Day for Disaster Reduction (#IDDR) - is on some one billion people around the world who live with some form of disability. Representing one-fifth of the world's population, persons living with disabilities have unique contributions, often overlooked, to help reduce the risk of disasters and build resilient societies and communities. The aim of this year's IDDR is to amplify this message especially as the world moves towards 2015, when a new global framework for disaster risk reduction will be adopted.

Here are some activities that you can do to support the Day and to share with your networks.

- We launched a Thunderclap social media campaign to help us amplify and promote IDDR. We need at least 500 supporters in order for the platform to send out a message on 13 October. If you are on Twitter, Facebook, or Tumblr, please support the campaign:

- Every year, IDDR is a global event. If you're organizing an event for the Day, please share your photos and comments on this interactive map:

- At last count, we've collected over 5000 responses from the IDDR survey on living with disabilities. While the initial deadline for the survey was 25 September, given the interest and response to the survey, it will continue to run until the end of the year. The preliminary findings from the survey will be announced on 10 October. The survey is available in Arabic, English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Russian, Japanese, Italian, and Indonesian:

Best regards,
Margareta Wahlström
