A training course(48 hours) on " Fundamentals of seismic analysis and seismic design” was offered by the Urban Planning and Disaster Risks Reduction Center/ Earth Sciences and Seismic Engineering Unit, An-Najah National University, the Palestinian Engineers Association, in collaboration with European Centre for training and research in Earthquake Engineering "EUCENTRE” and The Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia -IUSS, within the Support Action for Strengthening Palestinian-administrated Areas capabilities for Seismic Risk Mitigation project in Palestine (SASPARM).
26 engineers from consultancy and supervision engineering offices and municipalities in the southern part of West Bank, have participated in the course.
A number of specialists from the UPDRR led and facilitated the training sessions. Training covered a number of themes, mainly: Introduction to Seismology, Site effect factors. (Local geology and soil conditions), Introduction to earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics, Dynamic response of structures, the influence of architectural and structural configuration on seismic performance of Buildings, Eccentricity and torsional consequences in structures, Seismic forces and building codes, Seismic design of reinforced concrete frames, Seismic design of reinforced concrete shear walls, Special topics on earthquake engineering (seismic retrofit and upgrading fundamentals,..Etc).
At the end of the course and in the presence of the Head and executive members of the Engineers Association, the director of (UPDRRC), and a number of specialists working at the center, certificates were distributed to the participants.
It is noteworthy that the Support Action for Strengthening Palestinian-administrated Areas capabilities for Seismic Risk Mitigation project in Palestine (SASPARM), includes a number of activities, including: training courses in the field of seismic design for buildings for engineers from engineering offices, workshops with ministries and government institutions and non-governmental organizations, public awareness campaigns for citizens and students, scientific publications, exchange of visits, etc.
